23 short stories written over the course of twelve months.

‘acts of service’ delves into the mind of an individual rotating between three jobs in the service industry. These anecdotal and diaristic entries flip between what it means to be the observer and the observed with a questioning of performance verses authenticity throughout. Due to a high demand on the physical, mental & emotional needs from the worker; these stories document the chaos and dysfunction this industry can have on an individuals life. Needless to say, not all chaos is bad. The lows are in constant friction with the highs, and this book aims to flow & hang in those moments from one page to the next. Interjected with tongue in cheek ‘meanings’ of the love language ‘acts of service’, there is a nod to the gendered roles enacted in this work. From the home to the restaurant, to the shop, to the club; each floor asks of clashing character traits and types of composure in order to achieve a job well done. With the cost of living as a looming threat, these short stories ask whether the character is attempting to run to financial safety or away from something greater.
