'HARD AS NAILS, SOFT AS SHIT' // PAINTING
‘HARD AS NAILS, SOFT AS SHIT’
148cm x 142cm
Silk & matt emulsion on wood
This piece aims to highlight the tension between these two phrases.
Appearing hard, tough being interpreted as a strength. Appearing soft, vulnerable, well that can surely only be seen as some kind of weakness?
What results in us trying to appear hard on the surface? Does this as a defense mechanism really protect us or in fact cause us more damage than we are willing to acknowledge?
And what do we do with all the soft, vulnerable parts? In what ways are we allowed to really delve into these parts of ourselves?
And ultimately why do we haves to be one or the other? Isn’t there something much more important, much more useful to us all that can be found in-between the lines?
Finding strength in the softness, strength in the vulnerable parts. Attempting to learn from the sore spots and not immediately scrambling to cover them up with hardness. Maybe softness can be some kind of armour too?
